Responsibilities:
Help shape the future of how some of the nation’s most complex and challenging data are used to enhance national security and protect the lives of Agents, Officers, and those entering the country.
Provide high-level architectural guidance, technical innovation, and analytical expertise to teams across CBP.
Champion all aspects of data architecture, analytic methodology, and visualization functions including engineering standards, governance processes, and providing vision and context to explore and effectively utilize emerging technologies.
  • Work with database developers and administrators across multiple product teams.
  • Serve as a data and technology expert across a broad and diverse set of mission critical applications
  • Actively participate in Agile Scrum sprint planning, artifact creation, sprint testing, regression testing, demonstrations, retrospectives and solution releases
  • Analyze project-related problems and create innovative solutions involving technology, analytic methodologies, and advanced solution components.
  • Deliver deployable software in short sprints.
  • The ability to be adaptable and work constructively with a technically diverse and geographically separated team is crucial.

Qualifications:
Required: 
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen with the ability to pass CBP background investigation, criteria include but are not limited to:
    • 3-year check for felony convictions
    • 1 year check for illegal drug use
    • 1 year check for misconduct such as theft or fraud
  • College degree (B.S.) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Management Systems or a related discipline.  Equivalent professional experience will be considered in lieu of degree
  • Professional Experience: at least seven (7) years related technical experience, with databases, including designing, implementing, and optimizing database systems.
  • Must be available to work a hybrid schedule with an on-site requirement in Ashburn, VA.

You’ll Bring These Qualifications:
  • Experience with data modeling, tuning, scaling, security, backup, recovery, and integrity of RDBMS, specifically PostgreSQL in AWS.
  • Solid understanding of concepts such as data types, indexing, performance tuning, query plans.
  • Ability to take high level requirements and work with Product Architects to create a data model to store transactional data.
  • Understanding of Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, or MySQL, as well as understanding of NoSQL databases like DynamoDB, MongoDB, Cassandra, or Couchbase.
  • Strong SQL skills for querying, analyzing, and managing data, as well as creating and maintaining stored procedures, triggers, and views.
  • Experience with CDC (change data capture) concepts and usage.
  • Knowledge of security best practices, including encryption, authentication, and access control, to ensure that sensitive data is protected and compliant with government regulations.
  • Experience with cloud-based database services such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) RDS, Google Cloud SQL, or Microsoft Azure SQL Database.
  • Experience with data integration tools and techniques, including ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes, and queue-based messaging systems to ensure seamless data flow between systems.
  • Familiarity with microservices based architecture and its impact to data storage.
  • Skills in analyzing and optimizing database performance, including indexing, partitioning, and query optimization.
  • Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams, including developers, data analysts, and business stakeholders, to gather requirements and communicate complex database concepts.
  • Experience helping customers and mission users conceptualize and prioritize their data analysis and visualization needs.
Desired: 
  • Experience with NoSQL databases such as DynamoDB, DocumentDB, or Mongo a plus.
  • Experience with geospatial data management a plus.
  • Experience with Apache Kafka for messaging and data streaming a plus.
  • Experience with data governance platforms such as Collibra a plus.
  • Experience in Continuous integration, Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) and DevOps processes and tools
  • Experience implementing or migrating to Cloud environments like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud, or Microsoft Azure.
